Definition of Graphic Designer
The design of communication
media, the creation of graphics, motion design and everything related to
graphic design is entrusted to our graphic designers (and not graphic
designers!). Their technical skills on design software allow them to bring your
abstract ideas to life, they are like our superheroes!

They participate in particular in
the creation or redesign of the identity of a company, a project or an idea,
however abstract it may be! The added value of their work is not just about
their artistic sense: the designers are also there to understand your needs,
identify your positioning and manage your project to ultimately deliver a
deliverable that will correspond to you 100%. They can also intervene in a
collaboration time to help you see more clearly thanks to the graphic
facilitation. It consists of grouping several ideas in an illustrated board to
help you make the best decisions.
We are used to saying that
designers have the extraordinary power to give substance to abstract ideas. And
it's not nothing!
The missions of the graphic designer
As a graphic designer my role is
first of all to understand customer requests. My role is not similar to that of
a graphic designer in a agency. We interact a lot with clients, lead
co-creation projects with them to better understand their needs. Identifying
and understanding customer demand is our first role.
Then there are three areas:
visual identity (creation of logos, graphic charters, etc.). Print (creation of
flyers or brochures for example) and web design where we conceive the graphic
style and design of applications, websites, and digital products. In all cases,
respecting the DNA and values of the client is essential.
What training to become a graphic
designer?
After my baccalaureate I entered
training at the visual communication school of Bordeaux, my course lasted 5
years. During the first year we follow a common core of applied arts, to
develop our artistic sense without touching the DTP software. Then we teach the
technical side, namely the use of software from the Adobe suite in particular.
In the third and fourth year, there is a choice of orientation to be made: either
in graphics, or in animation, then there is the choice of different
specialties. Between the web (Coding, CSS…), corporate and advertising branches
I chose the last because I liked the notion of concept and the part of
reflection associated with these projects.
How to become a good graphic
designer?
The technical aspect is very
important, good mastery of DTP software is essential. For all professions of
graphic design, curiosity is a quality that must be cultivated. Taking an
interest in everything is part of everyday life (watch, social networks, news,
trends, etc.). I would also say that we must constantly know how to adapt, be
patient with customers because the requests are not always very clear. You have
to know how to accept the fact that our creations are sometimes not accepted
right away when we consider that the aesthetics correspond well to the project.
Ultimately, the decision is up to the customer, we are here to create visual
representations that make sense and not just beautiful things.
Then, I would say that we should
not bury ourselves in a graphic style but know how to adapt and propose
solutions, play with different universes because each client is unique and we
have to tell a story differently.
The tools of the graphic designer
It may be old-fashioned but paper
and pencil are always within reach of my hand to make sketches, take notes ...
It is essential for me and often everything starts from a first drawing!
I very often use the Adobe suite
(Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign, etc…). For web projects and applications, I
use prototyping tools like Figma, Sketch, Invision. These latter tools allow
you to test ideas and are great for creating very realistic prototypes.
The challenges related to the
profession of designer:
In the art and design
professions, the challenge is to know how to bounce back. We must not make
beauty, we must make sense. Our first challenge is to always create something
that sticks to the company's brand image. This pushes us to get out of our
comfort zone and ask ourselves the right questions to produce work that is in
line with the client's values.
